Baking Goods Shops

27 Oct

Bonjour Trading is the choice baking supplies shop in Penang.  They have everything you need to make and decorate professional (looking) cakes: pans, flour, fat, flavoring, candles, even moldable chocolate to fashion an edible trishaw on top of your birthday cake.  Located in Pulau Tikus, steps from the market. 9a-6p Mon-Sat, 6 Lingtang Burma, 04-226-3285.

Sugar at Straits Quay has the full array of baking needs, as well as novelty gifts and cake mixes in cute bags for the baker on your Christmas list.  They also offer baking classes, see website for details.  10a-10p daily, 1F above Healy Mac’s, 04-890-GULA.

Mt Erskine Market has a tiny stall selling baking essentials – flours, mixes, cupcake liners, etc and even has a little fridge stocked with butter and cream.  115 Jalan Mt Erskine, look between the hawkers’ center and the veg market.

The Organic Shops (post coming soon!) stock all the alternative flours, oils and sweeteners you might need if you are pursuing a wheat-free or healthy alternative baking path.  Favorites: i.e. Organics & Oon Organics next to Pulau Tikus market, Just Life Organics at Tanjung Bungah Hillside.

The Tanjung Bungah Wet Market (behind the bus terminal on Jalan Tanjung Bungah) also has a small baking stall with supplies and ingredients. It’s located in the back, left corner.

Good tip! I don’t often make it up that way, so I appreciate the local advice. :)
